Over the past few years, X/Twitter has been on a rollercoaster of change, morphing into something that feels a lot less like the old platform we all knew. So, is X still the wild, wild west or a digital ghost town for your business?
Remember Twitter? The simple, no frills platform that had us obsessively scrolling for breaking news, witty banter and random musings?
For businesses, X once represented the fast paced digital highway to reach an engaged, responsive audience. But now, things seem to have changed a bit!
The continuing rise of the rebels
With all the changes at X, how are the other socials doing?
Instagram continues to flex its photo based muscles and its visual storytelling reigns supreme in industries where aesthetics matter – lifestyle, fashion and food.
LinkedIn is still the heavy hitter for B2B connections and industry expertise, some reports suggest that the platform has over a billion users worldwide, spread across more than 200 countries.
TikTok rules the attention economy with short form videos and its addictive algorithm ensures that even the most obscure ideas can capture a global audience in a matter of hours.
Threads, quickly gained traction, reaching 100 million users within five days and 200 million by mid 2024. This initial explosive growth has now cooled, but it remains a key player in the social media world.
And whatever people say, let’s not forget that Facebook remains one of the leading social media platforms. Although its growth has slowed in recent years, it still has a user base of around 3 billion!
Plus there’s Bluesky. It’s relatively early days, but for businesses looking for something new, it could be worth a look!
Born from Twitter’s original co-founder, Bluesky is pulling in pretty strong initial numbers. A few figures have been bandied around, suggesting the platform could have around 20 million users (Nov 24), with millions of those joining this year alone.
Does X still have eyes on then?
X does have its loyal followers though – from politicians and journalists to influencers and brands, the platform still holds a level of power in the fast paced, real time content world.
The platform has shifted from quick tweets to an “everything app,” adding long form posts (premium), videos, payments and creator monetisation. The blue bird is out, the minimalist “X” is in and there’s a bigger push for paid features.
In terms of stats, they vary quite a bit. I’ve seen a range of between 300 – 585 million active X users a month, with approx 1.7 million new users signing up daily.
That’s not to be sneezed at, but still puts X outside of the top ten most popular social media channels.
Conclusion: X – A Platform at a Crossroads?
Is X still relevant for business then or is it a digital ghost town? It depends. If you’ve got an audience that still uses the platform, there’s no reason to give up on it. But the landscape is changing, and X is no longer the guaranteed road to success it once was.
