Five minutes. That’s all it takes to be remembered, to spark an opportunity, to stand out.
Here’s five actions you can take in five minutes to build better connections, win more referrals and keep everything running smoothly.

Conveyancing – Let’s get moving
1: Send a “client update/any news?” email or voice note to an estate agent. Keep them up to date, stay up to date and stay on their radar, building those relationships. Why not pop in and say hi?
2: Take a different route home and look out for any ‘For Sale’ boards. Get to know what’s moving and shaking in your local area.
3: Check your client database/CMS. Take five minutes and go through current work on the CMS, make sure you’re aware of important milestones.
4: Send a quick text/email update to a client before they chase you. You’ll make their day, it builds trust and saves you time by being proactive.
5: Wander down your high street and introduce yourself to a local mortgage broker. They might just remember you for their next referral!
Family Law – The calm in the storm
1: Buy your secretary a coffee and a pastry. They handle tough calls and know your clients in a different way to you. A small thank you goes a long way.
2: Write a thank you note to a referrer. If they’ve sent you a client or a good lead, a personal note is always appreciated!
3: Check your firm’s website profile. Make sure your profile reflects the compassionate, approachable lawyer you are.
4: Write down something a client said that reminded you why you do this. Read it on a tough day.
5: Chat to your department head. See if there’s anything in the pipeline that’s coming your way or that you can help with. Proactive People Prosper!
Commercial – The business champion
1: Check your LinkedIn profile. Does your profile say the right things about you or why clients should instruct you?
2: Pick up the phone to a client. Not salesy, not legal, just hello. Find out what’s going on in their world, I bet there’s something!
3: Give LinkedIn a five minute skim. Stay in the loop with developments. Like things your clients are posting, give them some love. They’ll love you back!
4: Speak to your marketing dept. See if you can work together on your personal marketing plan. Personal branding is paramount!
5: You know that client you get on really well with? Does anyone else? Probably not, so get in touch with them and ask for a testimony.
Personal Injury – The justice seeker
1: Record a 30 second video on a common PI myth. Get it out there on the socials and watch engagements rise!
2: Say hello to the most influential people in the firm – Your receptionist. They’re often the first people clients interact with and can be your biggest advocate.
3: Research recent injury law cases. Stay up to date and offer “hot off the press” advice to your clients. Why not post your take on it too?
4: Build relationships with local healthcare providers. Hop on LinkedIn, search for local physios, doctors etc and connect. It could lead to future referrals.
5: Call a client and ask how they’re doing. No agenda, just a human connection.
Wills, Trusts & Probate – Future planners
1: Check your LinkedIn profile photo and bio. WTP is a person to person business, so looking like you and sounding like you is important!
2: Buy your sausages from the local butcher. Get your haircut locally too and pop down to the market. People trust professionals who are visible and support their community.
3: Quickly call a financial advisor, pop in and say hello to your local funeral director. Regular contact with fellow professionals can lead to new referrals.
4: Speak to your Fam and Conv Dept. There’s a real correlation between FAM, CONV and WTP clients. Make the most of it.
5: Record a quick video. I know, scary, but it’s not really. Imagine the client is in front of you. Prop your phone up on the meeting room desk, press record and chat away!
Dispute Resolution – Problem solver
1: Note down words clients actually use when talking about disputes. I bet they’re not legal terms. Use their language as much as you can.
2: Email your department head and ask if there are firm wide initiatives you can help with. Visibility matters and being front of mind for all depts is essential!
3: Read the “comments” section on a news article about a dispute. Raw public opinion is eye opening and can help you connect with what people really care about.
4: Follow up with a dormant client. “How’s Sarah doing, she had a lot on her plate a few months ago”. A simple “How’s things” can reignite the conversation.
5: Walk around the office. Take five minutes to speak to someone new. Ideas and cross selling can happen when you least expect them!
Employment – Workplace guardian
1: Send a quick email to an employer client or HR professional you know. Staying on their radar keeps referrals coming in.
2: Check your firm’s EMP homepage and your bio. Does it reflect the current employment landscape? Is there a testimony on your bio?
3: Pop into a local café, head to the health club, chat with the owners. They have employment law needs too. Whilst you’re at it, go and see Geoff, he’s Chartered now!
4: Get in a Group. There’s more groups on Facebook and LinkedIn than you can shake a stick at. Join the relevant ones, keep on eye on them, recommend your firm.
5: Check your online reviews. Take five minutes to see what clients are saying about you online. Google yourself!
Property Development – Brand builders
1: Go for a stroll, a drive. Keep your eyes on the road, but soak up any new developments that have sprung up or have the potential to.
2: Comment on a LinkedIn post from a developer, architect, land agent. Stay in their world and stay relevant.
3: Call a potential client and offer to see them for free, on site. I know an incredible lawyer who does this and it works. Don’t go in your suit though, they are magnets for curtain twitchers!
4: Catch up with a land agent. They know everything that’s going on! A five minute chat could open up new opportunities for you and your clients.
5: Organise a meeting with your in house team. A quick sync with your team helps everyone stay on top of their caseload and prioritise effectively.
